Slower Days in the Past从前慢

Remember young days in the past.

People were sincere and honest.

They honored what they said.

Early morning in the railway station.

Long, dark and empty was the street.

The soybean milk diner was steaming with heat.

Days were slower in the past.

Carriage, horse, and mail did not reach fast.

You need your lifetime to just love the person who is right.

The lock was fine in the past

The key was exquisite and fit

You lock and he will get it.

(27-Book5 Unit3)Times Change

Four decades ago, by implementing the reform andopening-up policy, China paved the way to becoming a fully-modernizedsocialist country. Now under CPC’s leadership, the Belt and RoadInitiativeallows China to develop further alongside other countries, forming a solideconomic basis for an eraof cultural prosperity. However, some integral components of our culture have changed for good.

In my neighbourhood, there was a humble bookstore with old brick exterior and dusty shelves, where a bunch of us kids would frequently drop by/in. We spent hours poring overcomics and literary classics or chatting with the elderly owner seated on the old furniture. From primary school to secondary school, this bookstore kept clearing away mist in my mind.

The other day, this legendary fixture was torn down and reconstructed into a bookstore chain. Saleswomen in fancy costumes are busy displaying best-sellers, stationary, learning tablets and even organic food, while the “literature-loving” customers are occupied with delivering book readings, poetry recitals, journalists meetings and even  jazz concerts. It feels as if you were in a noisy cafeteria!

Plus, our mother tongue Chinese is being changed by emojis,a pictorial language coming in different categories. Most teens argue that these pictographs with emotional meaningare similar to our gestures and facial expressions, facilitatingexpandingupon the way in which we communicate. There’s even a tendency to adapt classicsby replacing words with textspeak and emojis.

However, educators worry that emojis’popping up make our language less accessibleto the elderly and these adaptations, despite good intention, have taken away the heart and soul of classics. The teens urgently need to use standard written language or the society won’t show sympathy for them in seeking occupations.
