In the shallower water of the Kromme, these fish spawn and reproduce. Fish are a natural and valuable part of the ecosystem of Utrecht’s waterways, but manmade structures such as dams and locks frequently disrupt their migratory patterns.
shallow
adj. 浅的; (呼吸)浅的,弱的; 肤浅的; 浅薄的;

Fish swimming upstream have to wait a long time for the 200-year-old lock to be opened, which makes them vulnerable to prey, Nijs said.
upstream
adv.上游; 向(或在)上游; 逆流;
adj.(石油工业等)上游的; 溯流而上的;

“I was having a conversation with the manager of Weerdsluis boat lock when I mentioned the challenges faced by the fish during their migration. I mentioned that this boat lock was actually an obstacle for them,” van Heukelum says.
migrate
v. 迁移; (随季节变化)迁徙; 移动; 转移; (使)转移(到另一计算机系统); 将(程序或硬件)迁移,转移(到另一系统); 移居;
“I knew I wasn’t going to be able to watch the camera for 24 hours a day,” says van Heukelum. “So, I thought I’d reach out to the public, see how many people would be willing to do this for just a few minutes a day. It occurred to me we could do this together.”
People can go to the program's website and watch a livestream of the fish underwater — and then, if they spot a fish, they can click to "ring" the fish doorbell. The staff will rotate a wheel to open the valve, allowing the waiting fish to pass through safely.

“The Fish Doorbell has mitigated one significant challenge, which is the obstacle of the boat lock, but perhaps an even greater challenge is that there is still a lack of habitat in the canals. They are just walls with water,” van Heukelum says.
“I do appreciate the value of automation, but I just feel that there is something beautiful when the public comes together to do something good,” says van Heukelum. “I’m hoping that when spring arrives, people will be excited to ring the doorbell once again.”
